Which Takes Less Energy? AC Fan On or in Auto?

July 16, 2020

During the summer, running your air conditioning can be your biggest monthly utility expense. So, it’s given that you’re seeking methods to save. That may involve using an energy-efficient AC setting or even upgrading to an ENERGY STAR®-rated model through air conditioner installation.

Changing your air conditioning’s fan setting is an additional way you can conserve money.

Your air conditioner relies on a fan to deliver the chilled air it makes. You adjust this fan at your thermostat by setting it to “auto,” which means the fan will only be on when the air conditioner is operating. Or you can switch it to “on,” which means it will work all the time.

Does putting your AC on “fan” save energy in Arlington? This isn’t always the case. Generally, using your air conditioner’s fan all day is going to increase your energy bill slightly.

But it also offers a few advantages (and disadvantages) when it comes to your home’s comfort. Here’s why.

Air Conditioner Fan Set to “On”

Having your air conditioner’s fan go continuously can better balance your home’s comfort. This is ideal if you live in a two-story home, since areas upstairs can be more hot. It’s also good if you struggle with uneven cooling due to hot and cold rooms.

It’s also great if one of your family members has been diagnosed with allergies, asthma or other respiratory issues. That’s because the air is constantly being distributed and purified. On the other hand, you may have to replace your air filters more frequently.

Having the fan on all the time can also drive up your energy bills. It could also make the fan wear out prematurely and need air conditioning repair.

Your residence may also seem more humid. Air conditioning helps balance humidity by clearing wetness from the air. But if the fan is continually on, it’s harder for moisture to drain from the condenser outside.

Air Conditioner Fan Set to “Auto”

This is the best energy-efficient setting, because the fan will only work when your air conditioner does. It’s ideal if your residence always appears comfortable, whichever spot you’re in.

There are a few drawbacks to using the auto setting. You could run into hot and cold locations in your house and decreased air quality. This is because air isn’t continuously flowing or being repeatedly filtered.

On the flip side, you’ll use less energy and won’t have to change your air filter as regularly. Both are savings that can add up during the year, so you’ll have to think about what’s best for your family.
